Werner Vogels, Amazon’s CTO, recently had an interview with ACM. The best quote:
“Developers are like artists; they produce their best work if they have the freedom to do so, but they need good tools.”
Binary Bonsai pointed out the upcoming Star Wars Trilogy DVD release. The movies will be released individually and include both the 2004 version and the original theatrical release (remastered). Hooray!
Yesterday in overtime, the Colorado Avalanche beat the Dallas stars to win the series and advance to the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs. All of the experts predicted Dallas to win the series. Maggie, the TSN monkey, was the only one to predict a win by the Avalanche. On to the second round!
Well if you want to find out, don’t use this quiz. Maybe the standards for geekiness have been shifted because being a geek is now the ‘cool’ thing. Maybe they should have actually had a geek write the questions… (more…)
On Tuesday night I went to see the Avalanche take on the Blues at the Savvis Center. The game was fairly good, although the ice was the worst that the players had ever seen. The score was tied nearly the whole game: 0-0 until the third, and then 1-1 until the shootout. It was fun to see a shootout, especially because the Avs won it.
Today I found out that I had seen David Aebischer’s last game with the Avs, as they traded him to Montreal for Jose Theodore on Wednesday night. I think Aebischer has a lot of potential and it is sad to see him go, but it will be interesting to see how well Theodore does in Colorado.
I gave Jaime flowers, dinner, and and engagement ring on my birthday yesterday but I got the best gift I could have gotten: she said yes.
Tonight I was greeted at my mailbox by the new self-titled MuteMath album. It continues the musical excellence that began with the “Reset” EP. Mixing rock, jazz, electronic, and a touch of experimental music, the album has a unique sound that will receive lots of playing time on my iPod (and stereo). It is only available at their (amazing) live shows and online at the Teleprompt Records store.
Valentine’s Day marks the release of Camino 1.0. It will be a great birthday present (yes, it is also my birthday). For those of you that are unaware, Camino is an excellent open-source web browser for Mac OS X. It is based on the Gecko rendering engine, like Firefox, and it has superior integration with the Mac platform. I have been using it for many years, from back when it was still called Chimera. I would have liked to contribute to the code, but school and work always seemed to take too much time. I did supply their official slogan, though. So, for my birthday everyone should go download a copy of Camino 1.0!
Disney has officially anounced their long-rumored purchase of Pixar. Is this good for Disney animation or bad for Pixar? Hopefully putting Pixar’s incredible John Lasseter in charge of creativity (chief creative officer) will keep the new Disney/Pixar productions to a high standard. If Pixar’s legendary corporate culture survives the aquisition I think we can still look forward to more great films out of them. Steve Jobs will also be on Disney’s board. What kind of impact will he have?
